Brothers

Sometimes I despair at how much our boys bicker (I am reliably informed that siblings that fight a lot have a much closer bond in adulthood) & at other times I am amazed at how caring & compassionate they are towards each other. Take our recent trip to Tesco's for example. Timmy & Luke clambered into the car ride outside the shop & Timmy, worried that the ride might go to fast, grabbed Luke's hand for comfort (we hardly ever put money into the machine as they are happy just to enjoy sitting & pressing buttons). They held hands for the entire time they were sitting in the car. So sweet! :O)
The past few weeks of the summer holidays have seen much more of this lovely brotherly love. All 3 boys have played together beautifully for hours at a time making up all kinds of weird & funny games. On this particular day they spent the whole afternoon playing The Red AA Man (he is red becuase his car is red Jordan tells me!) fixing cars & prams with their tool kits & driving around the garden & in & out of the 'jungle' as they call the 3 trees at the bottom of the garden! they run out of petrol at an alarming rate & regularly breakdown & need rescuing by the AA Man or a police car. Jordan's lovely workman's outfit was made for him by my dear mum & is just right for storing the tools of the trade, especially when fixing the playhouse roof as holding tools gets tricky when you are balancing on the top of a Little Tikes car!
Several new games have developed in the hours spent playing in the garden this summer. One game the boys have invented is called Dig Dig. I have no idea how exactly it is played or its object or rules. It looks like they are playing ring-o-ring-o-roses & it involves much falling on the ground & laughing! Timmy or Luke often request that Jordan plays it with them. Playing with the toy prams has played a big part of the summer so far too. Luke is the only one who really plays with toys as babies in the pram though, Timmy & Jordan are much more interested in how fast they can push the prams around or folding them up to put in the 'boot' of their cars. I really like seeing them playing with toys that you don't usually see boys playing with & I love that they see it as totally normal. I like that they often end up pushing a pram load of matchbox cars around in their pram too! It bugs me when other kids say they don't do something because it's only for girls. I love the fact that Jordan's favourite colour is pink & that he has the strength of character to stick with his own view even though loads of the other kids in his class say pink is a girl's colour....
Another thing the boys have invented is the Island of Wet Wet. It came about as we were driving back from dropping Lee at work one day. We go along the dock road past the Albert Docks & there are lots of boats moored up there including a pirate ship & a red rescue boat. Out of nowhere the boys invented the Island of Wet Wet, a place they all seem to know very well but that is a mystery to the rest of us. Now, whenever we drive past, one or all of them will pipe up 'Look! There's a red boat on the Island of Wet Wet!' or some other little story before they all collapse in heaps of giggles!

And just for fun, the other day we did observational drawings of fruit to while away a wet morning. It was fun!

Isn't it beautiful to enjoy your children growing? Their delight in games and make-believe and drawing give grown-ups an extra pleasure as we recognise something of our own childhood in their lives.
I like your commentaries, Emily, they make me feel as though I was there too.
Love,
